About Defining Projections

Projection information is stored within an LAS file's variable length records (VLR). Projection information is quite useful and serves as a form of metadata and documentation of the data source. However, many LAS files do not have projection information associated within the file. This tool can be used to define or assign a projection for one or more LAS files.

How to Define a Projection for LAS Files

If you cannot locate the "Define LAS File" projection tool, please visit the Using LP360 in ArcToolbox™ to learn how to add tools to ArcToolbox.

1. Click the open folder button.
2. Navigate to the folder that contains one or more LAS files.
3. Select the LAS file(s) and click "Open". Use the "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys to select multiple LAS files if necessary.
4. Click the button for the "... Spatial Reference".
5. Select a spatial reference system that represents the selected LAS files and click the "OK" button.
6. Click the open folder button to select the "... Output Folder".
7. Navigate to a folder where the new LAS files can be created, and click the "Add" button.
8. Once all inputs have been satisfied, click the "OK" button in the ArcToolbox.

Tip A summary dialog will appear during the process. Use the "Cancel" button to cancel the process or "Details" button to toggle the details of the process.
