RXP Cutter splits large Riegl RXP recordings into shorter, time-based pieces. It uses Riegl rxpcutter. A multi-part recording (one .rxp file plus its .rxp_001, .rxp_002, and matching .crc files) is treated as one recording and cut into separate RXP files. The new files are independent recordings you can process on their own.
Open RXP Cutter from the Sensor tab, in the Utilities group.
The tool uses the RXP files in the selected folder only. It does not look in subfolders, and it does not use the map, LAS layers, or an area of interest.
LP360 must be able to find Riegl
rxpcutter.exe. It looks in Program Files\Common Files\LP360, in T:\Riegl\bin, or at the path listed in ProgramData\LP360\rxpcutter_path.txt. If it cannot find the program, Analyze stops with “Could not find Riegl rxpcutter.exe on T: drive or in Program Files.”Source and Output
The top of the RXP Cutter dialog (Figure 1) is used to choose where the recordings are read from and where the cut files are written.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Source folder (RXP to cut) | Folder that contains the RXP files to split. When the dialog opens, this is the active cycle’s Laser1 folder, if that folder exists. Otherwise, it is the project folder. |
| Output folder | Folder for the new RXP files. When the dialog opens, this is the same as the source folder, so the new files are written next to the originals. Choosing a new source folder with ... also sets the output folder to that same folder. |
Use the ellipses button (...) to browse. The folder picker opens at the current path.
Each RXP set in the folder is cut. A set is the base .rxp file plus its continuation files (.rxp_001, .rxp_002, and so on) and any matching .crc files. Files already produced by RXP Cutter, named with _part in the file name, are their own sets. You can cut those again.
If the folder has no
.rxp files, Analyze stops with “No RXP files found in the selected folder.”Original RXP files
The Original RXP files group (Figure 2) chooses what happens to the source files after a successful cut.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Leave in place | Selected by default. The original files stay in the source folder, next to the new files. |
| Move to folder | Moves the original files to another folder after the cut succeeds. The path is filled in as the project folder, then RXP_Original. The path stays unavailable until this option is selected. The folder is created when you submit if it does not already exist. |
| Delete after successful cut | Deletes the original files after the cut succeeds. You are asked to confirm before the cut starts. |
Only one of these applies. Choosing Leave in place, or Move to folder, Delete after successful cut. Checking Delete after successful cut clears the other two. Clearing that checkbox returns the dialog to Leave in place.
Move and delete use the files that were in the set when Submit started. New files created by that cut are not moved or deleted. If a later recording in the same run fails, files from recordings that already finished stay moved or deleted.
Segment length and summary
The rest of the dialog (Figure 3) is used to set the segment length, review the plan, and run the cut.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Target segment length (minutes) | Length of each piece, in minutes. The default is 30. Allowed values are 1 through 480. |
| Analyze | Reads the recordings in the source folder and fills in the summary. Submit stays unavailable until Analyze finishes successfully. |
| Summary | Before Analyze, the box says, “Run Analyze to see recording details and planned segment count.” After Analyze, it lists each recording. |
| Help | Opens this article. Help stays available while Analyze or the cut is running. |
| Submit | Starts the cut. Available only after a successful Analyze, and only while a task is not already running. |
| Cancel | Closes the dialog. If a task is still running, you are asked “A task is still running. Cancel and close anyway?” |
Changing the source folder, the output folder, the segment length, or the original-file option clears the summary. Run Analyze again before Submit.
During Analyze, the progress bar slides and the status line names the recording being checked, for example “Probing 260101_143022.rxp (1 of 2)...”. When it finishes, the status line says “Analyze complete. Review the summary, then click Submit.”
The summary lists:
| Line | Description |
|---|---|
| RXP file(s) | Number of recordings in the folder. |
| Size | Total size of that recording, in GiB, and how many parts it has. |
| Duration | Length in minutes, with start and end clock time (hours:minutes:seconds). |
| Duration note | Shown for a multi-part recording. The duration is estimated from the first part and the total size, so Analyze stays fast on very large sets. The last segment still runs to the end of the recording. |
| Device | Scanner name, when the recording provides it. |
| Serial | Scanner serial number, when the recording provides it. |
| Planned segments | How many pieces will be created, and about how many minutes each piece is. |
A single-file recording is measured directly. A multi-part recording is estimated. In both cases the last piece is cut through to the end of the file, so the end of the recording is not left off because the duration was estimated.
If the file name starts with a six-digit date (YYMMDD_), that acquisition date is kept on the cut files.
The output folder must have enough free space for a full copy of the recordings being cut. If it does not, Submit stops with “Not enough free disk space on the output drive.”
How to Cut RXP Files
- On the Sensor tab, in the Utilities group, select RXP Cutter.
- Review Source folder. It is the active cycle’s
Laser1folder when that folder exists. - Review Output folder. It matches the source folder unless you choose another folder.
- Under Original RXP files, Leave in place selected, or choose Move to folder, or Delete after successful cut.
- Review Target segment length (minutes). The default is 30.
- Select Analyze.
- Read the summary. Confirm the duration, the planned segment count, and the duration note when it is shown.
- Select Submit.
- If delete is selected, confirm “Delete original RXP files after a successful cut?”
- Wait for the cut. The status line names the recording being cut, for example “Cutting 260101_143022.rxp (1 of 2)...”. When it finishes, the message is “RXP cut completed successfully.”
Each segment is a new RXP file in the output folder. The name is the original file name with _part added. Example: 260101_143022.rxp is written from the name 260101_143022_part.rxp, with one file for each planned segment.
To cut those new files into still shorter pieces, run RXP Cutter again on the same folder. The _part files are separate recordings. Move and delete still apply only to the files that were there when that new cut started.
