📌 Problem
When running the Auto Toe Extraction on the Volume tab or the Auto Toe Extractor Point Cloud Task (PCT), you may encounter:
Error: “Unable to cluster toe line”
🔍 Root Cause
This means the tool could not generate a continuous toe polygon for the stockpile. The toe defines the volumetric base, so failure to cluster prevents automatic extraction.
- Insufficient or noisy point density near the pile base.
- Poorly defined stockpile boundaries (vegetation, adjacent slopes).
- Parameter settings too restrictive (grid size or minimum vertical change).
- Incorrect input point filter (e.g., excluding Ground Class 2 points).
✅ Probable Resolutions
1. Verify Point Cloud Quality
- Ensure ground points are classified.
- Include Class 2 (Ground) points in Input Points Filter.

(Insert screenshot of Input Points Filter dialog showing Class 2 selected)
2. Adjust Auto Toe Extractor Parameters
| Parameter | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Grid Size | Use eyedropper to match point spacing |
| Minimum Vertical Change | UAV/drone: 0.10 m Airborne: 0.25 m |
| Maximum Size | Based on largest pile dimensions |

3. Exclude Overhead Points
Remove conveyors, vegetation, or other objects interfering with toe detection.

4. Manual Fallback
If automatic clustering fails repeatedly:
- Use the Draw Area Feature
tool and the Feature Edit Tools to digitize the toe manually.
- Heads-up digitizing ensures accurate volumetric base definition.

Best Practices
- Digitize the seed point near the top of the pile before running the tool.
- Confirm the Active Area Layer.
- For complex terrain or adjacent slopes, manual toe editing is often necessary.
Quick Checklist
✔ Include Ground Class points
✔ Adjust Grid Size and Minimum Vertical Change
✔ Remove overhead objects
✔ Use manual digitizing if automatic fails
