LP360 2014.1 Service Pack (SP1) Release Notes
Modifications of Existing Features
- Default Raster Overview Resampling Method Change
The default Raster Overview Resampling method has been changed from CUBIC to AVERAGE in LP360 for Windows. This is now also the default Resampling Method when exporting images. - Added a Licensing Prompt giving users options for selecting a license when Using LP360 for ArcGIS, instead of being prompted for Admin Credentials
When using LP360 for ArcGIS and a license is not granted, a dialog is now displayed allowing the user to select a different license level, or check on licensing via the LP360 License Administrator. This resolves the situation of having an incorrect license type for improperly-configured License Server installations, or having no license available, and minimizes the need for an administrator to intervene.
Defect Fixes - Fixed an issue in which LP360 would crash upon exit on a VM. (LP360 for Windows did not crash and all functionality within LP360 worked fine otherwise.) (3738)
- Fixed an issue in which Classify by Features would classify all points within a polygon even when you specified only "within a distance of 1". (3800)
- Fixed an issue in which selecting Display by Classification would toggle off the point display. (3806)
- Fixed a memory leak in the TIN code. (3752)
- Fixed an issue in which LP360 would crash when attempting to open a LAS file with Read/Write setting when the LAS file was open for read in another application. (3361)
- Changed the behavior of the Control Point dialog so that it no longer requires an LAS Layer. (3370)
- Fixed an issue in which a floating license server aut file that has an expired license would fail to load that license file to the license server. (3395)
- Fixed an issue in which the Define LAS Projection command was assigning an incorrect EPSG code for ESRI Authority PRJ's. (3275)
- Fixed an issue in which the Define and Reproject tools was not writing the vertical reference system in the header. (3277)

LP360 2014.1 Release Notes
New Features
-
The following features that were only available in LP360 for ArcGIS are now available in LP360 for Windows.
-
-
Control Point Tools
The Control Point toolbar allows you to manage feature classes that have control points.
-
Image Load Dialog Box
The Add Files dialog has been enhanced in LP360 for Windows to include an interface for opening image files. Thus you now open both LAS files and Image files using the red Add LAS/Raster files buttonon the LP360 toolbar.
-
Image Files Tab
The left pane in LP360 for Windows has always been an important part of LP360 that helps manage your LAS Layers and data. It now includes a Raster tab for managing image files. Images are automatically aggregated into compatible layers (just as LAS files are) and the Table of Contents display allows you to view the image list and the layers to which they belong. This new approach to managing image files allows easy organization of hundreds of individual images (such as tiled ortho-mosaics) into a single image collection in the Table of Contents.
-
Image Properties
You can manage certain properties of the new image display, such as displaying the color band order, enhancing the image display using a Linear Percent Clip, setting the image background display, and setting a color fill using your choice of color where no data is available.
-
Image Pyramid Generation on Import
The option to pyramid image files when opening them is also available in LP360 for Windows.
-
Vectors (3D) Display in Profile and 3D Views
The Profile and 3D windows are now able to display 3D vectors.
-
-
-
Display Labels on Features
The option to show labels for features on the map is also now available in LP360 for Windows. A new Labels tab on the shape file Properties dialog gives you options for managing which labels to display and how to display them.
-
-
The following are new features available with this release in both LP360 for Windows and LP360 for ArcGIS.
-
Smooth Contours Option
The Smooth Contours option is an enhancement of the previous Contours display feature. Contours can still be displayed in the same way as before (shape edges where crossing TIN facets), but now you have the option to display contours with smoother corners. You will likely only see this when you use a considerably zoomed in extent.
-
Classify by Feature Point Cloud Task
The Classify by Feature command is now a Point Cloud Task. It is a useful way of assigning classifications to points within a spatial relationship to other features. This adds powerful new classification capability since a Point Cloud Task can be chained into a processing "macro".
-
Planimetric Control Point Analysis in Control Tools
Tools allowing you to measure and probe control points are now available in the Control Points Report dialog box. In addition to the automatic probing of vertical control, the ability to measure planimetric control has been added. This makes LP360 (particularly LP360 for Windows) the ideal platform for measuring the accuracy of digital orthophotos. The control points data table then displays the values of the measurements, and the map will display the differences between the control point locations and the measured points. The new reporting fields and accuracy statements are based on the draft 2014 ASPRS Accuracy Specifications expected to be adopted by December 2014.
-
Dynamic Load and Unload of LAS Files
The new Select and Load Files Graphically command allows you to dynamically control the display in the map by simply clicking on the file/area that you want to display. This tool is useful for managing very large data sets such as those generated by mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems.
-
Rail Extraction
The new Rail Extraction Point Cloud Task allows you to define properties that will locate and extract the rail centerline vectors (the "alignment") and to optionally classify top of rail points.
-
LAS Intensity from RGB Point Cloud Task
The new LAS Intensity from RGB Point Cloud Task generates intensity values that may be missing from certain LAS files. The red, green, and blue values from the files are used to generate the intensity values. This is a common problem with point clouds derived from correlated images; the RGB fields have been populated from the image, but the Intensity values have been set to zero. Having the intensity field populated makes visualization during point Classification possible.
-
Densify and Smooth Line Polygon Point Cloud Task
The new Smoothing and Respacing Point Cloud Task gives options for respacing a geometry by adding and/or removing points. Using this PCT, you can densify geometry by adding points or smooth the geometry by removing points.
-
Ability to Turn Off Points Display in the Profile View
The Profile Window now has a No Points display option, which is useful for viewing vectors. -
Cross Sections Tool now Available as a Point Cloud Task
This new Point Cloud Task is an enhanced version of the previous Cross Sections tool. It generates vertical cuts (cross-sections or profiles) of the point cloud at an interval that you specify along a line. Polygon clipping and optional DXF output options are also available.
-
Import ASCII to Shape
The Import ASCII XYZ command now allows you to import ASCII data into a shape (.SHP) file. This provides a way to load control points that are in ASCII format.
-
Change Point Data Record Format when Converting LAS Versions
LP360 now has the ability to not only promote LAS version numbers (for example, from version 1.2 to version 1.4) but also to change the Point Data Record Format when going from LAS 1.0-1.3 to LAS 1.4 versions. This will be important when using a mixture of tools for LIDAR data processing with a deliver format requirement for LAS 1.4 Point Data Record Format 6 and above.
-
Point Cloud Tasks Add Flags Options
All talks that can alter the classification of a point (including Point Cloud Tasks) now have the option to set flags where classifications can be changed. In addition, an option is included to set flags only without modifying the source class. This is very important for new delivery requirements that require preservation of the original class but flagging specific states such as Ground point in the Overlap region.
-
Drive Mode option on Control Points Toolbar
The new Drive Mode list determines to which type of points the adjacent panning controls will jump when they are used (Control points, Check Points or All points).
-
Save upon Exit
LP360 for Windows now asks if you want to save a project before exiting.
-
Polish Language Version
LP360 is now available in Polish. This is the third localized version of LP360. Spanish and Japanese became available in 2013.
-
Non-Georeferenced Image Display
Non-Georeferenced images can now be displayed in LP360 for Windows.
-
-
Modifications to Existing Features
- Volumetric Analysis tools have been simplified. You can now use the tools with minimal, if any, adjustments to the parameters. The options to customize your Volumetric task are still available; however, the simplified macros allow you to use a Volumetric task as they are with the default settings.
- Volumetric Analysis licensing level requirement has been reduced from Advanced to Standard.
- The Force All Points option is now available in the LP360 3D Viewer.
- The No Points option is no longer a selection in the LIDAR Layer Draw Tools. A no points display is now accomplished by simply toggling the LIDAR Layer Legend button on or off. This is also the case for the 3D View, The Profile View, and the Preview window.
- The LAS filename is now displayed when using the Identify tool.
- Point SHP Layers now support basic point symbols, triangle, square, circle, and cross, for display in LP360 for Windows.

- The Execute Active Task error message when a <Project Path> has not been set has been clarified.
- The Add Data Layer command on the LP360 toolbar in LP360 for Windows now exclusively adds shapefile layers.
- A new 'Use Base Polygon' checkbox on the Hull tab of Volume Point Cloud Task has been added. It disables the Hull perimeter and automatically uses the Base Polygon for the Hull Polygon.
- A new warning message displays when you attempt to execute a Point Cloud Task and new or changed parameters have not been saved or 'applied' with the Apply button.
- LP360 now remembers the Active Control Point Layer, Elevation Field, Drive Mode, and Pixel Size (ArcGIS only) between sessions in the project settings.
- Horizontal and Vertical graticules in the Profile View are now set to ON by default.
- The Pyramiding LAS Files status bar now displays the file count.
- The Cell Size is now automatically calculated based on point spacing when exporting surface models.
- The Draw Profile Line command has been modified so that a double-click at the end of the line drawn will use the current Profile depth. With a single click at the end of the line, you can still define a new Profile depth for the line.
- The default Profile Line Depth has been changed to 5 map units rather than 100.
- The default Graticules has been changed to 5/10 LINES rather than 5/10 map units in the Profile View for new projects.
- A new message in the TOC of LP360 for Windows now alerts you if a shapefile does not exist.
- 'Append' has been changed to 'Output Mode' in the I/O Manager.
- Feature layer display is now available in the 3D and Profile Windows in LP360 for Windows.
- Boundaries are now turned on by default when adding LAS files with the Footprint Only option.
- The output SHP file group is now available on all tabs in the Point Statistics Extractor PCT.
- The File Header check box list is now always enabled on the Point Statistics Extractor PCT.
- The Conflate PCT now requires a Standard license.
- A non-existent project Layer Name can now be entered in the I/O Manager.
- Shape files can now be created by importing ASCII text files.
- The rectangular stamp size has been modified so that it is no longer too small and restrictive.
- The speed of adding a large number of files to the Add LAS Files dialog has been increased.
-
The ASCII XYZ command has been changed so it can handle descriptions with spaces between the comma delimiters.
-
'Buffer' has been changed to 'Classify' in Conflation dialogs to clarify the action taken by setting this option.
-
The single task execute command for a Point Cloud Task now runs the active task in the PCT tab.
-
The control point name is now loaded using a drop-down menu on the Control Points toolbar.
- Modified the length of the Profile cursor location bar to 10 screen pixels. This makes the location of the profile cursor visible in the Map View regardless of how narrow the profile line.
- Clarified the title bars of the Scale toolbox tool to be more accurate.
