LP360 2017.1 Release Notes
New Features
- New Contour Smoothing Algorithm
The new and improved contour smoothing algorithm removes noisy data which causes contour jaggedness by interpolating the Z elevation around contour levels, thereby smoothing the surface and creating much better contours. This display works for both the Map View and 3D view when the user has turned on this setting via the usual Smooth Contours button on the LP360 Toolbar or Contour Settings in the Export Wizard.
Non-smoothed Contours:
Smooth Contours with less jagged areas as a result of the new smoothing algorithm:
- Suppressing Breakline Points
Users can now suppress point breakline features (ex. mass point, point constraints) when in smooth contour mode. It is located in the Contour Smoothing section of the Contour Properties page of the Layer Properties and Export Wizard dialogs. This feature can be particularly useful when there is very little point data left in an area after cleaning out unwanted points (such as heavily vegetated areas). Contours can become broken due to "rogue" breakline points in the contour smoothing band pulling tin triangles in its direction. That is, any Breakline (constraint) point with a Z within the contour smoothing band (smoothing distance) is "smoothed" out.
Example of broken contours due to sparse TIN data (breakline points in cyan):
After smoothing the breakline points out of the contour smoothing bands (points still shown):
- Revamped and simplified method of adding data to LP360.
Users can now add LAS/Raster/Feature data via one simple button on the LP360 Toolbar.
-
Clicking this button brings up the Add Files dialog where there is a tabular selection method for adding data. A new Feature tab has been added to allow users add shapefiles from this dialog. In addition, the currently selected tab (data type) is pronounced for easier viewing. Note that an "undefined" Project SRS will be automatically set by the Add Files dialog when only LAS, Raster or Feature layer is added . If all three types are added at the same time, the priority used to set the Project SRS is: 1. LAS 2. Raster 3. Feature.
- Performance Improvements to 3D Zoom
There have been some changes to the 3D Display Properties -> 3D View tab to improve performance to 3D zooming. The two zooming methods are:
1. Allowing the user to set the Zoom Rate to a value between 0.05 and 0.25. This is the traditional LP360 fixed rate zoom. However, the user is now able to change the rate of the zoom which controls the distance the eye point moves per zoom update. The zoom will always move with the same fixed percentage value (5% to 25%) offset the Z axis.
2. Automatic Rate Adjustment. This allows the rate to change more fluidly based on the user's mouse movement data. Small mouse movement means a small zoom rate, and vice versa. It is toggled on and off with a checkbox and does not use the Zoom Slider setting above.
- Schema Editor shortcut
There is a Schema Editor shortcut button included on the Feature Edit Toolbar.
- Reproject/Shift LAS Point Cloud Task
This new Point Cloud Task supports LAS Shift/Reproject operations to a new output file. It supports reproject as well as all of the various options which can be seen in the dialog. These include converting the SRS to one defined by clicking '...' and a Shift/Scale option which allows the user to apply X, Y, Z shifting or scaling to a LAS layer. A new LAS layer with the newly shifted or scaled points will then be added to the TOC upon completion.
- Show Feature Analyst Shortcut
Here, a user may now conveniently launch Attribute Editor to edit attributes, as well as feature vertices, from the LP360 Feature Edit Toolbar using this new shortcut.
- Files tab for viewing existing feature files
Users can now find the file location of feature files via a new 'Files' tab on the Feature Layer Properties dialog.
-
Option to 'Export by File' in Export Wizard
Users now have the option to 'Export by File' in the Export Wizard. It is found on the Export Extent drop-down menu on page two of the Export Wizard dialog. Due to the new USGS requirements for converting point data to LAS 1.4, this is a very useful and important new feature when exporting point products by file.
- New and Improved GUI Style
As LP360 no longer supports Windows XP, Windows styles have been moved to support Windows Vista and above. This improves GUI appearance and clarity and could lead to performance improvements as well. The new GUI buttons and styles are sharper and less flat than the old style.
-
Old Style:
-
New Style:
- Graphics Card AutoSelect
Now, high-end graphics cards are able to be automatically selected by LP360 for use on nVidia® and AMD® notebooks with both integrated and discrete graphics cards. The default system setting is usually for this graphics auto-select feature to be enabled, however, if the user has set the application to specifically use an integrated graphics card, then the auto-select capability is not used and the card selection made by the user is honored.
- Define Map Spatial Reference System (SRS) in Project Settings
In project settings, the user can set the Map SRS to be the SRS defined in the Project Spatial Reference System box, or use the SRS of the active LAS layer. This allows the map or WMS backdrop to reproject based on the option chosen.
- View File Footprints and Selections while Zooming/Panning in the Map View
The user now has the ability to still see file footprints and highlighted selections while zooming and panning about the Map View. Before, the footprints and selections disappeared, only to reappear upon finishing zooming and panning actions.
- Special Marker Point Symbols Display in True 3D
Users select point marker types in the Symbol and Labels Property Pages for feature data. To this point, only the default symbol was rendered in proper 3D. Now, special shapes are drawn in proper 3D as well, and they do not "float" above the surface as the user rotates the 3D window. Instead, the symbols stay connected to the surface model in their proper place.
-
'Input Datasets' Group Added to Point Cloud Task Dialogs
Certain point cloud task dialogs (ones that take geometries and LAS layers as input) now allow the user to explicitly define the input geometries (polygon or shapefile) and LAS layers that will be used to execute the tasks.
-
Grid Generator Point Cloud Task
A new Point Cloud Task called Grid Generator has been added, allowing the user to impose a cell grid over an input geometry and/or LAS layer based on input parameters and output the result to a shapefile.
-
Feature Edit Toolbar
The Feature Edit Toolbar in LP360 for sUAS now offers a group of tools that allows you to create, delete, move, and edit features at the individual vertex level. The toolbar allows the user to do directly begin a feature edit session in the Map and Profile views. Vertices can be edited in both the map window (for planimetric editing) and in the profile window (for vertical editing). The Feature Edit tools integrate seamlessly with the Point Cloud Task (PCT) Z conflation tools, allowing for automatic assignment and adjustment of the Z value of individual vertices, groups of vertices, or entire features.
These include a host of new capabilities and commands for: Selecting Feature Layers, Saving Feature Edits, Discarding Feature Edits, Creating Feature Layers, Creating Features from other Feature Geometries, Selecting/Editing Features, Moving Features, Selecting/Editing Vertices, Adding Vertices, Deleting Vertices, Reshaping Geometry, Splitting Geometry, Simplifying Geometry, Respacing Geometry, Reversing Geometry, Showing the Vertex Properties Dialog, Auto-Z Mode Palette, Showing the Feature Edit Options Dialog, Feature Analyst Dialog (View/Edit Attributes), Schema Editor, Undo/Redoing Feature Edits, and Deleting Features. Please see the Feature Edit Toolbar help topic for more information on these tools. -
Feature Analyst Dialog
An exciting and powerful aspect of the new Feature Edit toolbar is Feature Analyst. The Feature Analyst Dialog button allows users to view/edit the attributes of features, parts and tabs on the current layer. Feature Analyst links feature analysis directly to editing features, so that any errors found in the user's data may be immediately corrected with the editing tools. The user simply double-clicks the appropriate feature's cell he wishes to change on the Features, Parts, or Vertices tabs. The user can sort on a particular column by clicking it. If a user selects a row (or rows) on a particular tab, then that row's corresponding features, parts, or vertices (whichever may apply) will be auto-selected in the other tabs and also in the Map View. So, there is total synchronization between the Map View and each of the tabs on the Feature Analyst Dialog. Feature Analyst also synchronizes based on Auto-Z and shift geometry right-click commands accordingly. The user can also create, save, and load analysis tests in Feature Analyst Options
and see the Pass/Fail results of those tests in the Feature Analyst main dialog via added columns to each for each type of test.
-
Analysis Testing
The user can also create, save, and load analysis tests in Feature Analyst Options and see the Pass/Fail results of those tests in the Feature Analyst main dialog via added columns to each for each type of test.
-
Support for Web Mapping (Tile) Services (WMS/WMTS)
New support has been added for WMS/WMTS services (e.g. Image backdrops) in LP360. There are several pre-populated in the 'Add WMS Layer' Dialog, including the Reckon WMS server. These backdrop layers are reprojected on the fly to the appropriate Spatial Reference System (SRS) as the active LAS layer is switched to a layer containing a different SRS.
-
Copy Feature Layers
In LP360 for sUAS, you may easily copy features and their attributes using the Copy Feature Layer dialog.
Options to append to an existing shapefile, copy attributes, and add to the map window are available in the dialog, as well as a text box for naming the copy layer. -
Merge Feature Layers Dialog
In LP360 for sUAS, you may combine multiple shape layers into one shapefile by using the Merge Feature Layers dialog.
Options to append to an existing shapefile, copy attributes, and add to the map window are available on this dialog, as well as a text box for naming the merged layer. -
Select Features
In LP360 for sUAS, one or more features may now be selected for editing within the map view. A feature must be selected before a feature level edit (move, delete, Auto Z, Interactive Z, etc.) can be applied. You can choose among a lasso tool, a drag select tool, or a digitize polygon tool for selecting features. Single clicking the edge of a feature works with all three tools. -
Feature Edit Options Dialog
In the Feature Edit Options dialog in LP360 for sUAS, you may alter parameters affecting feature symbology, confirmation dialogs, Auto Z settings, and geometry settings. -
Symbology – Configures the symbology for the various Feature Edit display modes.
-

-
Auto Z – Configures the methods for automatically assigning Z values to the vertices of features.
-
Geometry – Configures processing parameters for tools such as Simplify Geometry and Respace Geometry.
-
EXP - Setting an Outline Contour allows just a single contour at a specific elevation value to be created. Create Feature from Identified Feature allows the user to Identify a feature and create a feature from that feature on the selected destination layer.
-
Transparency
The Transparency dialog allows you to change the transparency level of a selected layer from between 0% (no transparency) and 100% (invisible) by dragging theslider in the slider control to the left or right to decrease or increase transparency respectively. Alternatively, you can enter an integer value between 0 and 100 into the text box to the right of the slider area to set an exact percentage of transparency.
-
Classify Non-visible Points
The Classification Toolbar Edit button has been repurposed to Classify non-visible points when pressed. With LP360 2016.1, the user can choose to classify points using the Classify Non-Visible Pointscommand. This allows users to either classify OR not classify points turned off in the display filter. This also includes the Profile View.
-
Point Classification at less than 100% resolution In addition, the 2D Map View now allows classification at less than 100% point resolution. This capability allows the user to edit point classifications without needing to load an entire point cloud.
Note: All classifications are still in the active LIDAR layer only and the Profile view is always at 100% resolution, so it has not changed. |
-
Classification Selection Displayed Across Views
Now when classifying points with the classification tools on the Classify toolbar, selected points will display on the 2D map view, 3D, and profile views. Selected points are updated simultaneously on all three views. This allows the user to have a sense of context when they are selecting points in a data set. -
Classify by Statistics Point Cloud Task
The new Classify by Statistics point cloud task allows for the classification of points based on the statistical analysis of a gridded area of interest. If you wish, you may produce a shapefile of your grid during the process of this point cloud task.
Statistics supported by this point cloud task at this time include: Low Point, High Point, Median Point, and Random Points.
This task is primarily useful for thinning points based on these statistics.
-
Create Feature Layers
In LP360 for sUAS, you may now create feature layers, give them a geometry type, and set their coordinate systems using the new Create Feature Layers dialog. Geometry types include 2D points, lines, and polygons as well as 3D points, lines, and polygons. Once created, you may use the new Create Featurecommand on the Feature Edit toolbar to add features to your new feature layers.
-
Re-Path Projects
The user can set a default data path for your current project by setting a project path. If you wish to change the path of a project you have been working on, you can use the new Re-Path Project dialog to find all instances of the specified path and replace it with a new one. When the program is finished, the project will be re-opened and a project backup file (*_backup.xml) will be created in the same folder as the original path.
-
Coordinate System Property Page
A user may can check and alter the coordinate reference system (CRS) of a layer through its property page. In the property page's "CRS" tab, you can open the Select Coordinate System dialog, where you can set or change a layer's coordinate system and datum.
